Two Massachusetts women sustained minor injuries in the pileup and were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, Mahwah Police Officer William Hunt told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The chain-reaction crash occurred just before 1 o’clock this afternoon where Routes 287 and 17 split just south of the New York State Thruway.

It involved two tractor-trailers, a Toyota mini-van, an Acura SUV and a Toyota Rav4 that overturned.

The Wakefield, Mass. women were headed to Rockaway in a Toyota Sienna mini van when they “realized they were on the wrong side of the highway,” Hunt said. “They were trying to go on Route 287 south towards Route 80. They were too far to the left, so they cut right.”

The Sienna struck the Acura SUV, damaging it slightly, before bouncing off a guard rail and slamming into the Rav4, Hunt told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The cars were then each struck by separate tractor-trailers, he said.

Wreckers had to be sent because of the size of the vehicles involved. The state Department of Transportation was also on the scene.

Traffic was diverted on nearby Route 17. The highway was then reopened just before 2 o’clock.

The 65-year-old female driver of the Rav4 is from Montague (Sussex County), New Jersey State Police Lt. Steve Jones told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
