MAHWAH, N.J. – A 17-year-old high school student from Rockland County who crashed his car into a guard rail on Route 287 in Mahwah while overdosing on heroin was revived by township police officers using Narcan, authorities said.

Officers found empty waxed paper heroin folds that had been ripped open on the passenger seat of the car, which had crahsed near the highway’s Mahwah exit at 2:40 a.m. Saturday, Police Chief James N. Batelli told Daily Voice.

The boy “was removed from the vehicle and placed in the rear of a patrol vehicle, where he began to exhibit signs of an overdose and became unresponsive,” Batelli said. “Officers administered Narcan, and the victim's vital signs improved.”

He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, the chief said.

It was the second Narcan save for Mahwah police in less than eight hours.

Officers responding to a medical emergency in a wooded area of the township Friday night found a 21-year-old man on the ground, foaming at the mouth, Batelli said.

Nearby were ripped-open heroin folds, he said.

The victim regained consciousness after they administered a Narcan dose, “but he was still unable to speak” when he was taken to Good Samaritan, the chief said.

“Approximately 78 people die each day from opioid overdoes in our country,” Batelli said. “Addiction and substance abuse is becoming one of the most important public health crises we face.”
