Released Death Row Inmate Who Killed Ramsey Cheerleader Dies In Prison

RAMSEY, N.J. — Edgar H. Smith, who confessed to killing a Ramsey High School cheerleader 60 years ago, died in a California prison hospital at 83 years old.

Smith of Hasbrouck Heights died March 20. His passing was not reported until Saturday, when The Washington Post ran a story.

Smith was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to die in the electric chair, The Post reports.

Influential commentator William F. Buckley Jr., however, campaigned for Smith's release in the mid-1960s. The murderer was ultimately removed from death row, the article says.
