MAHWAH, N.J. -- Carmela Tondo, 82, of Mahwah, passed away peacefully at home Thursday, April 1, 2016, surrounded by family.
Tondo was born in Avellina, Italy and lived in Suffern, N.Y., before moving to Mahwah 24 years ago.
She was retired from Almedica in Waldwick 16 years ago.
One of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved spending time outdoors in her garden.
She is survived by her four children, Linda Columbia (David), Julia Kozak (Michael), Angela Tetla (Paul) and Nick Tondo Jr.; seven grandchildren, David Columbia Jr. (Suzanne), Alison Tetla, Kyle Columbia, Michelle Tetla, Eric Kozak, Carli Tetla and Nicole Kozak; four great-grandchildren, Mikayla Johansen Columbia, Rhyli, Allyette and Jackson Columbia; her siblings, Peppinella Caruso, Anna Cantoli, Rose Bassano, Angelina Vacchiano, Samuel Sorice; and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Nicola, in 1992; and her siblings, Mary Abate, Pellegrino Sorice, Frank Sorice and Joseph Sorice.
The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave. Wyckoff. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s R.C. Church, 200 Wyckoff Ave., Ramsey. Interment will follow at Maryrest Cemetery, 25 Seminary Road, Mahwah.
