With Firing Range Pending, Ramsey To Consider Tightening Gun Law Wednesday

RAMSEY, N.J. – The Ramsey Borough Council is slated to give final consideration Wednesday evening to an ordinance that would prohibit firearms from being discharged at firing ranges within the borough.

The ordinance introduced last month revises a current ordinance that prohibits the firing of “any pistol, shotgun, rifle or other type of firearms anywhere in the borough,” but exempts indoor and outdoor firing ranges, Northjersey.com reports.

The revisions were introduced after the borough received an application to create a 60,000-square-foot indoor firing range at the former Liberty Travel building on Spring Street.

Pennsylvania gun range safety officer Peter Cuttone told the Planning Board that the facility — dubbed the Screaming Eagle Club — would be monitored by 24-hour surveillance and have almost 75 employees, including full-time and armed security officers at each of its three entrances, according to Northjersey.com.

But the proposed safety measures have not done much to convince some Ramsey residents that the range is a good fit for their town.

Over 1,000 people, including more than 700 Ramsey residents, have signed an online petition opposing the range.

"I'm so strongly against this gun range and retail outlet, that my husband and I will consider relocation should this happen," Christine Dailey said.
