The township is building Mahwah's tree canopy, one tree at a time after losing hundreds to Hurricane Sandy. In the following years more were lost to the natural decay of mature trees.
Over 1,000 sapling trees were distributed in two hours during the Mahwah Environmental Tree giveaway.
May 24-25, 29 trees were planted around Commodore Perry Field and near the Mahwah Museum. The planting is scheduled to be completed this May 21-22.
DPW Director Glen Dowson and superintendents Tony Iannaccone and Tony Simonelli coordinated the tree events. Joyce Kilmer Society & MEVO also assisted.
Anyone with ideas for expanding the tree canopy can call the mayor at 201-452-2477 or email wlaforet@mahwahtwp.org.
