Five of the eight officials helped pass the vote, one official was absent, northjersey.com reported.
The policy describes transgender students as those whose gender identity is different from that assigned at birth, the story says.
Responsibility for determining a student’s gender identity rests with the student, or with the parents if the student is a minor, the policy states, according to northjersey.com.
Either the superintendent or an administrator will meet with the parents and student to discuss the student’s name choice for record keeping on a case-by-case basis, the article says.
District staff members will also be informed of the student’s access to restrooms, locker rooms, physical education classes and athletic programs, it says.
