Labor Day 5K 'Rust-Buster' For Mahwah Marathoner

MAHWAH, N.J. — Joe Singleton of Mahwah knew the routine and the course well.

The 30-year-old marathon runner — who trains with Ridgewood-based RaceFaster — drove out to Glen Rock early Labor Day for the Glen Rock Jaycees' Arboretum 5K run, just as he did last year.

Only difference was this year, he took second — not first.

"For where I am in my training and for what the purpose of this race was, I got out there and I competed and I’m happy with my race," said Singleton, who finished in 18:12.

"I'm in marathon training and this race was just a rust-buster and a leg-turner."

The Wyckoff YMCA employee was neck-and-neck with Ridgewood's Justin Jenkins, 25, until mile 2.5, when Jenkins pulled away and finished in first place — just seconds ahead of Singleton, who still came in 2nd.

But Singleton, who's running in a Philidelphia half-marathon Sept. 18 in preparation for the Chicago Marathon in October, isn't letting his loss get him down.

"It's just a race," he said. "There are many races and now you just have to go back to the training board and do it again."
