Laforet has served as mayor for the past five years and is up for reelection in November.
"The taxpayers and the residents have the final say. If we've done a good job, they're going to vote for me," he told Daily Voice. "If we haven't, they won't. It's a very simple thing.
"We've never worked for votes, we've worked to change things for the benefit of the community."
Laforet said he is proud of the township's two AAA bond ratings, its volunteers, and the pristine water supply "which we are going to protect."
Looking ahead, there are some challenges facing Mahwah, including a proposed new flight pattern for Teterboro Airport.
"We have to see through this test, but we will make more noise than those jets will in order to stop what's theoretically coming," Laforet said.
There's also a planned Pilgrim Pipeline that would run through the township while traveling from Albany, N.Y. to Linden, N.J.
If the pipes burst, "it could affect our drinking water forever," said Laforet. "That contaminated water would mean that our well system is rendered useless."
