Runfeldt has "printer's ink in his veins," according to a news release. His parents gave him a Kelsey Excelsior Press for his 12th birthday. For the last 53 years, he's been learning the letterpress printing business, teaching others about it, printing all kinds of things for himself and others and collecting vintage printing equipment.
At his farm in Frenchtown, he has restored presses, demonstrated them to visitors, made videos and built museum-quality reproductions of famous presses. In this multimedia presentation, Runfeldt will describe many interesting things about his favorite subject.
The letterpress process has a rich history that began with Johannes Gutenberg in 1450. It was later brought to America by Benjamin Franklin and the Colonial printers, and it continued as the main method of newspaper publishing through the 1960s. The Ramsey Journal was printed on letterpress equipment from 1892-1967.The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m., at the church building, 100 Island Road, Mahwah.
The lecture is part of the Mahwah Museum Lecture series; admission is free to museum members and $3 for non-members. Refreshments will be served.
