A dog who was at first believed injured by fireworks had actually been shot, said authorities who charged a Passaic County man with animal cruelty. Driver In Late-Night Route 208 Crash Was Drunk, Franklin Lakes Police Say
A Wanaque driver was drunk when his vehicle rear-ended another on Route 208 in Franklin Lakes late Tuesday, authorities said. The first driver told police that a 2016 Honda driven by Deivy Montalvo of Haskell sped up on his 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the right lane of the northbound highway and he couldn’t get out of the way. High winds whipped a roaring fire that tore through a Paterson neighborhood Saturday night, destroying five houses, severely damaging a sixth and displacing 59 residents. The coronavirus has killed eight patients at one Wanaque nursing home and infected many more there and at another in town, officials said. UPDATE: A Florida tractor-trailer driver who was arrested after authorities said he set his pit bull loose on police during a traffic stop in Ringwood died after suffering an apparent seizure. John Baker, 54, suffered the seizure in the Passaic County Jail's intake unit Tuesday night, said Bill Maer, the spokesman for Sheriff Richard H. Bernik. A Morris County prostitute and a Wanaque john were both arrested by Franklin Lakes police after he briefly abducted her, authorities said. Eduardo Areche, 43, and Kristie Pattin, 38, of Stirling were both passengers in a vehicle stopped Monday night on Route 208 by Officer Ryan Sweeney, Capt. John Bakelaar said. Dogs, Cats Flee, Rabbit Dies In Pre-Dawn Haskell House Fire
Two dogs and two cats made it out safely, although a rabbit died in a destructive pre-dawn home fire Monday just off Rainbow Lake in Wanaque. Firefighters by 5 a.m. had contained the blaze to a second-floor bedroom and part of the attic in the 77-year-old, 1,740-square-foot Lakeside Avenue home. Companies from Bloomingdale and Pompton Lakes provided mutual aid at the scene, while Ringwood and West Milford provided borough coverage.

Flames and smoke kept a Wayne police officer from rescuing a dog who died in a house fire, authorities said. Township police, firefighters and First Aid Squad members responded to what began as a garage fire on Sycamore Terrace around 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, Detective Capt. Christian Wittig said.
