Two Dead Whales That Washed Up On NJ Beaches Had Infectious Diseases, Necropsies Say
Two whales found dead along the Jersey Shore suffered from infectious diseases, marine biologists said. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) posted on Facebook to release the necropsy findings for the 17-and-a-half-foot minke whale discovered in Lavallette on Friday, Oct. 4. The animal's body was found near Trenton Avenue at around 6:30 a.m. The male was considered thin and had no food in its digestive tract. Coast Guard Suspends Search For Missing Kayaker In NJ Waters
The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a missing kayaker off Keyport in Raritan Bay, authorities said. The search was suspended at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 24. The search for Zhenjiang Ding, 74, began after his kayak began taking on water Monday afternoon, the Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard said it searched approximately 129 square nautical miles for over 37 search hours, with no signs of Ding. A Siberian Husky fleeing from noisy fireworks was rescued by Monmouth County Sheriff's Officers off the Jersey Shore. Caiden, a 10-year-old dog, was saved after swimming about a mile and a half off Union Beach, authorities said. Sheriffs' Officers Michael Forgione and Kasey Collins located Caiden and brought him on board in the Raritan Bay, navigating shallow waters to reunite him with his grateful owner. DEP: Here's Why Thousands Of Fish Are Dying In NJ Rivers
Countless instances of dead fish found floating in New Jersey waterways since last year has called for a statewide investigation. Last July, hundreds of dead menhaden -- an extremely abundant fish found in coastal areas, also known as bunker fish -- were seen floating in the Hudson River, causing shock and concern among many residents.
