A 14-year-old driver and 15-year-old passenger who were caught after crashing a stolen SUV during a pursuit from Route 3 to Route 21 were carrying key fobs from vehicles swiped as far south as the Jersey Shore, Clifton police said. A 31-hour SWAT standoff in Newark ended Friday afternoon when police returned fire on the 42-year-old suspect, police announced. 61 Nabbed In Essex County 'Operation Clean Sweep'
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office arrested 61 defendants in a month-long warrant sweep, authorities announced Monday. Three juveniles wanted for violent crimes were among those seized in "Operation Clean Sweep." Others had been charged with weapons possession, aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, selling drugs and other serious offenses, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II said.
