Over His Death: Report
Family of the Westfield High School principal who died following an attempt to harvest his bone marrow for donation are suing Hackensack University Medical Center. Gov. Phil Murphy has ordered that U.S. and state flags be flown at half-staff Monday in honor of Dr. Derrick Nelson, the principal of Westfield High School who died April 7 following a bone marrow donation several weeks earlier. He did all of this while serving the children of Plainfield, Orange, and Westfield, as a teacher, an assistant principal, and eventually as a principal. Tragically, Dr. Nelson d…

Dombroski, who transferred to the department from Carlstadt earlier this year, was donating blood while attending the Bergen County Police Academy when he decided in December 2016 to submit a buccal swab for DNA testing for possible entrance into the blood donor program at Hackensack University Medical Center, Police Chief James N. Batelli said. “A short while ago he was contacted by medical profess…

A national search is being conducted for a local dad and patient in HackensackUMC's John Theurer Cancer Center in need of a stem cell/bone marrow donor. A stay-at-home father to a nine-year-old son, Merlo Weiss, 45, is fighting acute myeloid leukemia (AML). He is searching for a Hispanic donor because matches are associated with ancestry. To help his mission, his husband David has teamed up with the Gift of Life Marrow Registry and they are conducting an urgent national search for Merlo’s donor. More than 190 donors have enlisted and over $11,000 have been raised, but time is running out…
