In turn, State Sen. Paul Sarlo and Assembly members Gary Schaer and Marlene Caride presented a joint legislative resolution saluting the 40 or so staffers from grades 9-12, as well as the award-winning newspapers contributors and advisors.

“These students are sending a message that the education they obtain through our public school system is of the highest quality -- and translates into national accolades," Caride said.

The Lighthouse has garnered several honors over the years, including the Award of Overall Excellence from the Garden State Scholastic Press Association for the last three years.

“It’s really terrific,” said journalism teacher Tanya Pastor, the newspaper's advisor the past eight years. “I am so proud of the students.

"The editors and staff have such dedication," she added. "It's wonderful to see them create such excellent material -- and that it’s recognized on a state and national level.”
