The 22 West New York police officers slated for layoffs Friday will not lose their jobs — not yet, anyway. “We have just received approval from the state Civil Service Commission…. to extend the deadline for police officer lay-offs until September 14, 2009,” Mayor Silverio “Sal” Vega said this afternoon. “We will continue to negotiate in good faith with the PBA and will also now open negotiations with the police supervisors.”
“Saving taxpayer dollars continues to be our administration’s highest priority,” the mayor said. “We remain very hopeful that these negotiations will reduce or eliminate the number of lay-offs that are necessary to keep property taxes stable.”
