Sgt. Paul Stolarz, a recognized drug expert, noticed that the woman’s eyes were droopy and “she appeared to be emotionally detached from answering questions posed to her,” Capt. Shawn Kudlacik said. “She was fumbling through paperwork and had trouble making eye contact.”
Christina Maiella, 27, needed help getting out of the car and had to hold onto it for balance, Kudlacik said.
After falling a series of dexterity tests, she was taken into custody, he said.
Carlstadt Police Lt. Denise Kimak was called to search Maiella and found the heroin folds, labeled “Pain Killer,” taped to her bra, the captain said.
Maiella was charged with various drug offenses and sent to the Bergen County Jail.
A judge ordered her released the next afternoon pending further court action under New Jersey’s 2017 bail reform law.
