Frank Stetz, a 46-year-old construction worker, was driving his Harley when it struck the Plymouth Voyager in the southbound lanes near Exit 82 just after 8:30 p.m., NJ State Police Sgt. Jeff Flynn said.
The van was either moving very slowly or stopped in the middle of the road, said Flynn, adding that the driver was charged with DWI.
"He was sweet, he was kind, he was always smiling," said Emerson Councilwoman Danielle DiPaola.
A funeral service for Stetz, a 17-year veteran of the all-volunteer department, was set for Friday at the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 127 Paterson Avenue, in Wallington.
Arrangements were being handled by Warner Wozniak Funeral Services.
