No injuries were reported in the three-alarm Pennsylvania Avenue blaze, which drew more than three dozen firefighters and gutted the house, Deputy Fire Commissioner Paul F. Haggerty said.
Firefighters and police were met with intense flames when they arrived just after 10:15 a.m.
The fire was "deep-seated and consuming the entire first and second floor, as well as attic space," Haggerty said.
Crews had to be evacuated twice due to safety concerns, including the collapse of a portion of the roof, he said.
They had the blaze under control a little over an hour later after an intense struggle, Haggerty said.
Mutual aid was provided by Rutherford, East Rutherford and North Arlington (FAST) firefighters. Firefighters from Nutley, East Newark, Secaucus, Wallington and Carlstadt covered headquarters for any unrelated calls.
The fire was under investigation but didn't appear suspicious, Haggerty said, adding that Bergen County Sheriffs Bureau of Criminal Identification collected evidence.
