They dialed 911, providing a description, as he fled, Ghione said
The alleged gunman had shed his sweatshirt in an apparent attempt to throw police off when he was grabbed about five blocks away on Belleville Turnpike by Sgt. Rui Encarnacao and Officers Tony Abilio, Kyle Steck and Anthony Scala, the chief said.
The Bergen County Sheriff’s K9 squad land Kearny police assisted, Ghione said, adding that the gun was found nearby — along with the proceeds.
The chief tentatively identified him as Ahmed Elaidy — also known by several aliases, he said. Police were still trying to confirm the true identity for Elaidy, who gave an age of 21.
He was ordered held on $100,000 bail, charged with robbery and weapons counts, among other offenses.
The sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification processed the evidence, Ghione said.
“I’m very proud of the work my department does,” the chief said. “Something like this happens and they’re right there.”
