Sgt. Joseph Prinzo and Officers David Ryan and Sean MacDonald stopped 20-year-old Frankie R. Ortiz of Paterson on Ridge Road on Tuesday and found him carrying a black automatic 9mm handgun, Police Chief Louis Ghione said.

After taking him into custody, the officers searched Ortiz’s backpack. Inside, Ghione said, they found a black wool hat with a full facel mask, black gloves, clear rubber gloves, an additional pair of sneakers and an additional folded-up black duffle bag.

Ortiz was set to rob the TD bank on Ridge Road at the corner of Noel Drive when he was grabbed, the chief said.

He remained held on $20,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail today.
