The shooting at the Riverview Gardens garden apartment complex just off Ridge Road and the Belleville Turnpike was reported at 11:46 p.m., Acting Police Chief John Hearn said this morning.
Responding officers found the victim and a 9mm handgun nearby, he said.
The victim was pronounced dead at University Hospital in Newark about an hour later, Hearn said.
Although ruled a suicide, the incident continued to be investigated, he said.
