It was just after 3:40 a.m. this past March 10 when the victims, both 20, told police that Ahmed Alaidy approached them on Harding Avenue near Morgan Place, pointed what looked like a silver revolver and demanded cash, Police Chief Louis Ghione told CLIFFVIEW PILOT at the time.

A Kearny police officer who heard his colleagues’ alert found Alaidy a short time later on the Belleville Turnpike, the chief said.

A K9 unit from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office later found what turned out to be a starter pistol in the bushes near a medical office nearby, he said.

Prosecutors this week said the 21-year-old Alaidy, who lives in Brooklyn, went out for cigarettes while visiting a friend and decided to rob the pair after seeing them on the street around 4 a.m. He took $26 from one man and $15 from the other, they said.

An indictment returned last month accuses Alaidy of putting the victims “in fear of immediate bodily injury while armed with of threatening the use of a deadly weapon.”

It also charges him with illegal possession of an imitation firearm “that would lead an observer to believe it was possessed for an unlawful purpose.”

Superior Court Judge James J. Guida on Monday set a Sept. 22 deadline for defense attorney Ron Bar-Nadav to respond to the please offer from Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor Ted Burke.

Under the proposed deal, Alaidy would have to spend four years and two months in state prison before being eligible for parole.

He remains free on $110,000 bail, posted 12 days after his arrest.
