LYNDHURST, N.J. -- A Lyndhurst police officer on the lookout for a burglar who bolted after he broke into a local school and stole computer equipment early Friday arrested a 46-year-old Morristown man hours later, authorities said.

A female custodian who was cleaning a second-floor classrom in the otherwise empty Community School on Valley Brook Avenue around 7:30 a.m. told police she went downstairs after hearing a noise and chased off an intruder who dropped a bag of stolen items that he was carrying, Capt. John Valente said.

She followed him out of the building as he ran west on Valley Brook Avenue and turned right onto northbound Lafayette Avenue, he said.

The custodian then flagged down an arriving teacher who called police.

While canvassing the area, Officer Richard Holicki spotted Ravon Porter walking north on Orient Way approaching Pennsylvania Avenue, Valente said.

Porter fit the description of the burglar, he said.

Fingerprints taken at the scene by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification matched his, the captain said.

A judge ordered Porter held on $17,500 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with robbery, burglary, theft and defiant trespassing.
