A 74-year-old woman said the robber slipped into the Bogle Drive home through an unlocked door, grabbed her and demanded money, Capt. John Valente told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
The woman’s husband, also 74, tried to intervene but was struck in the head, Valente said.
A 50-year-old upstairs neighbor rushed to help, but she was pushed aside by the robber, who fled empty-handed into nearby Bergen County Park, the captain said.
Throughout the assaults, he claimed that he was armed, Valente said.
The husband was taken to Meadowlands Hospital for treatment of face and head injuries. Lyndhurst EMS workers treated both women at the scene, Valente said.
Based on the victims’ description — and assisted by a witness who’d seen him go by — police found a suspect in a residential parking lot in the 700 block of Riverside Avenue, he said.
He was identified as Evanalain Siberkrob-Herhman, 24, of Kearny, Valente said. He was “attempting to remove and discard several pieces of clothing in an apparent attempt to avoid being recognized by police,” the captain said.
A Bergen County Police K-9 unit assisted officers in searching the park area for any possible discarded weapons. The Bergen County Sherriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identificaiton collected evidence.
Siberkrob-Herhman was being held on $420,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with robbery, burglary, three counts of aggravated assault and one each of criminal restraint and hindering arrest, as well as possession of a hypodermic needle.
