Anthony Ricigliano said he was headed down River Road at just before 2:30 a.m. when he noticed the suspect crouched near the front door of a the strip mall store.

Ricigliano said he watched the man leave, double back and then walk away quickly, so he stopped him.

“He was somewhat evasive and extremely nervous,” Police Chief Jim O’Connor told CLIFFVIEW PILOT, “so he took him in for questioning.”

At headquarters, the chief said, 24-year-old Rasuul Salaam told Ricigliano: “I was going to break into the liquor store. I came here because it’s quiet and I didn’t think anyone would see me.”

Salaam was charged with attempted burglary and released pending a Municipal Court hearing on Tuesday.

“It was nice, head’s-up police work,” O’Connor said.
