Matthew Selwood, 23, of Lyndhurst hailed the cab at Union Square in Manhattan, then bolted on Chubb Avenue around 10 p.m. Monday after being told of the $79.75 fare, the 31-year-old taxi driver told police.

Officer Charles Giangeruso was headed to the call when he saw Selwood running across a lawn and stopped him, Capt. John Valente said this afternoon.

Sellwood was released on a summons and given a May 12 court date to answer a theft of services charge.
