U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton also sentenced 36-year-old Ryan Otskey to three years of supervised release for his role in the network run by Vincent Hsia out of his Lincoln Pharmacy in Edison.
Otskey admitted obtaining blank prescriptions from the High Mountain Health clinic in North Haledon that Hsia then filled for more than 61,000 oxycodone pills that Otskey then sold on the black market.
Wigenton sentenced eight people in all in connection with the scheme. Two of them are from Nutley: Marc Calabria, 33, goes to federal prison for 51 months, while Angelo Cifelli, 34, gets three years probation to go with a $2,500 fine.
The longest sentence, far by, went to Hsia, 52, of Flemington, in February.
Federal authorities said Hsia willfully filled stolen blank prescriptions made out to fictitious patients. Cifelli even drove some of the buyers to the pharmacy, they said.
U.S. Attorney Paul S. Fishman credited special agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration Tactical Diversion Squad, the FBI, the IRS–Criminal Investigation unit, the ewark, Elizabeth, and Nutley police department and both the Essex County prosecutor’s and sheriff’s offices.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony J. Mahajan of the Narcotics/Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Unit in Newark.
Fishman said Hsia failed to report more than $1.2 million in gross receipts earned by the pharmacy during the 2008 and 2009 tax years, as well as $275,000 in income on his 2008 and 2009 personal tax returns.
