“NOT NOW,” Bernardo Cumsille, 47, messaged back. “I LOVE YOU DADDY BUT I MISS YOU,” Andrew wrote, before he stopped typing, upset.

Cumsille, of North Bergen, was on vacation at a hotel in Concepcion — the epicenter of the earthquake. “It came down,” he said of the hotel. As it did, a beam fell, killing a man a few feet behind him. Cumsille escaped.

Bernardo Cumsille

A former Chase employee who handled contract work as a compliance officer with Banco Bilbao Vizcaya the past two years, Cumsille was relaxing near the family home in Pichilemu after his contract ended in January.

Ever since the earthquake, he’s been in touch with his ex-wife, Ruby, Andrew’s mother. And although his words have shown his loved ones nothing but courage and hope, Ruby Cumsille knows this man all too well.

“I can tell he’s crying,” she told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning. “He’s a nervous wreck.”

“I’m here in the South,” he wrote to her this weekend. “I can’t get out, bridges are down and people are raiding supermarkets. I’m with a family that took me in.”

There is little food and no water, he said. “I haven’t been able to sleep. It keeps trembling. a cada ruido salgo arrancando (at the slightest noise I run). I’m worried about not getting out of here.”

Still, he insists, “estoy bien.”

Ruby has been messaging with her ex-husband every chance she gets.

tu no estas solito,” she wrote to him. “yo y el Andrew simpre estamos contigo (you are not alone …me and Andrew are always with you)”.

TU ERES UN HIJO DE DIOS BERNARDO (You are a child of God, Bernardo),” she added. “EL NO TE VA A DEJAR SOLO (He will not abandon you).”

Worried about his father, Andrew had a dream after the quake hit.

“He was talking to a super hero about saving people,” his mother told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “He wants his dad to come home as soon as possible.”
