Police began pursuing the man’s silver Acura on Van Winkle Avenue just before 5:30 p.m., following reports that he’d left the Walmart shopping center with two suitcases full of stolen merchandise, Detective Capt. Darren Sucorowski said.

However, he abandoned the car — with the mother, her boy and the merchandise inside — and took off on foot.

Police at first took the woman in to custody but then released her without charges.

Sources identified the man being sought as 31-year old Logan Williams of Paterson, who they said is 5-foot-7 and 180 pounds, with a shaved head.

The search concentrated on the banks of the Passaic River near Ackerman Avenue after Clifton police reported seeing someone get out of the water.

Other agencies involved include Passaic, Wallington and the Bergen County Police Department.
