The Riverside Avenue resident said she heard banging on her front door and looked out to see the suspect walking down the driveway around 9:30 a.m., Capt John Valente told Daily Voice.
"He came back to the front door, she said, and tried to push his way in," Valente said. "So she screamed and he ran off."
The intended victim gave police a solid description corroborated by a passerby, who said the suspect ran toward Riverside County Park along the Passaic River, the captain said.
Lyndhurst police got help establishing a perimeter from Rutherford and North Arlington police on the Bergen County side of the river and Nutley police on the other, he said. A Bergen County Sheriff's K-9 unit was summoned.
An officer quickly spotted fresh footprints headed north to the Kings Court area, Valente said.
There police found 61-year-old Mark Banks hiding behind a trash bin, he said. Banks had dirty gloves with him, the captain added.
Banks, who originally is from Elizabeth, remained at police headquarters awaiting bail early Monday afternoon on charges of burglary, criminal mischief, eluding and resisting arrest.
