Democrats take control of Bergen County freeholder board

UPDATE: There will be a shift in the makeup of the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders: With a fraction under 100% of the vote counted, a pair of Democratic challengers have taken a seemingly insurmountable lead over incumbent Republican Freeholder Robert G. Hermansen and his running mate, former River Edge mayor Margaret “Peg” Watkins.

DEM – STEVEN A. TANELLI                           159,522     27.57%
DEM – TRACY SILNA ZUR                             154,626     26.72%

REP – ROBERT G. HERMANSEN                   127,853     22.10%
REP – MARGARET FALAHEE WATKINS         124,571     21.53%

Democrats regained control of the board — 4-3 — after having it two years ago.

Tanelli is a North Arlington councilman and Zur a Franklin Lakes attorney.

Bergen also went for President Obama, as expected, despite having a Republican county executive and governor:

DEM – BARACK OBAMA / JOE BIDEN     192,460     54.97%
REP – MITT ROMNEY / PAUL RYAN        154,418     44.10%

Despite all of the obstacles thrown up by Hurricane Sandy, 63.88% of Bergen County’s 551,725 registered voters went to the polls.

There are a host of electronic, absentee and other ballots that have yet to be counted. The results of thousands may not be known until tomorrow, which affect some towns (SEE: Bergen County absentee ballots tear in machine, some results could take days).

Meanwhile, incumbent Mahwah Mayor William LaForet won re-election to a full term with 100% of the votes counted.

WILLIAM C. LAFORET     5,640     63.56%
EDWARD F. SINCLAIR     3,233     36.44%

The only other mayoral term available was in Englewood, where popular Mayor Frank Huttle III ran unopposed. For the record: He got 6,829 votes.
