Bank robber brought serious firepower

Police believe a man who held up a Sovereign bank in North Arlington carried a .357-Magnum — a cannon of a gun that could have done terrible damage — and took off in a black, two-door SUV.

The robber pulled up in the SUV and parked along the Passaic River next to Lucky Seven, a convenience shop where shots were fired during a holdup just a few months ago. Witneses told police the robber walked around to the River Road bank wearing a wig, a fake beard and a white baseball cap and left carrying a green bag full of money.

It was a scary moment not only for the people in the bank, who faced the gun that Clint Eastwood made famous in his “Dirty Harry” roles but for area residents and merchants, as well.

“I can’t believe how fast the police responded,” said one resident who lives nearby. “The helicopter, the Bergen County K9 dog team, the Bergen County Sheriffs [officers], the State Police, the Kearney detectives — [even] the boat team from North Arlington, Lyndhurst and Kearney.

“To watch them all work together was outstanding, and as a resident I feel very confident. I know the outcome will be to complete what they started,” the resident said, “and I have faith and pray for them. God bless and keep up the good work!”
