LYNDHURST, N.J. – Horace R. Bogle Jr., of Lyndhurst, died Sunday, Jan. 24. He was 94.
He was the husband of 56 years to the late Louise Bogle (Chenette); father of Elizabeth Bogle Rohwer and her partner, Dennis Hadley; Kathleen (Bogle) Lehmann and her husband, Eric Lehmann, Donna (Bogle) Gomes and her husband, Antonio Gomes, Jean Bogle and her husband, Paul Vagianos, and the late Ronald Bogle; father-in-law of Denise Bogle (Drozdowski); grandfather of Melissa, Ian, Jessica, Elizabeth, Cassandra, Sabrina and Alanna; and great-grandfather of Brecklyn.
He was a lieutenant and aircraft fighter director in the U.S. Navy during World War II serving from 1942-46, with 19 months in the Pacific on 26 destroyers and the Battleship New Jersey. He received the Bronze Star and the Navy Communications Medals.
An attorney in private practice for more than 60 years, he was magistrate in Lyndhurst from 1954-61, commissioner of Lyndhurst from 1961-69 and mayor of Lyndhurst from 1965-69. He was president of the Lyndhurst Lions Club, a member of American Legion Barringer-Walker-LoPinto Post 139 and a chairman of Red Cross fund drives.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University in 1942 and his Bachelor of Laws degree from Rutgers Law School in 1949.
Friends will be received from 3-7 p.m. Thursday with a memorial service at 6:45 p.m. at the Ippolito-Stellato Funeral Home, 425 Ridge Road, Lyndhurst. Cremation will be private.
