The William D. McDowell Observatory will no longer be open for public viewing on Wednesdays or other uses until the repairs can be done, according to northjersey.com.
The $6.5 million observatory and telescope at DeKorte Park Plaza in Lyndhurst first opened in 2008 and was dedicated to William McDowell, who served as the first elected County Executive of Bergen County, northjersey.com says.
McDowell was a North Arlington resident and mayor, and died in 2007, northjersey.com reported.
The facility features classrooms, labs and one of the most powerful telescopes in the region but now needs weather-dependent repairs, northjersey.com says.
The observatory sees anywhere from 3,000 to 4,000 visitors annually and was formerly affiliated with Ramapo College before forming an alliance with Bergen Community through 2016 reports northjersey.com.
