Lyndhurst VFW Post Pays Final Respects To Decorated Township Veteran

LYNDHURST, N.J.– A group of VFW members headed to Arlington National Cemetery for the funeral of one of Lyndhurst's most decorated war veterans.

Robert "Wayne" Johnson, who served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, survived being "blown of of the hatch of his armored vehicle by an RPG twice (during battle)," said VFW Post 3549 Quartermaster Thomas Graffam. "He was 100 percent disabled, but despite the scars you would have never known. He was a lot of fun to be with."

Johnson, a former staff sergeant, served as the VFW post's past commander and chaplain. He died on March 27.

There were 25 Lyndhurst residents who made the trek and roughly 45 people at the July 27 service all together, Graffam said.

At a military funeral, the honor guard carries the casket, folds the American flag and presents it to the family, Graffam added.

A 21-gun salute and the playing of taps follows.
