"I decided to design a visual sign of appreciation so that when the officers are driving around, protecting and serving all of us, they might get a heartwarming feeling," said O'Connor, wife of Chief James O'Connor. "People in town tell me all the time how great they think the LPD is and how much they appreciate what they do. Me knowing it and the officers knowing it are two different things."
O'Connor purchased 100 signs to start, but has given out more than 700 in the last few weeks, she said.
"It's wonderful how the community has come together and rallied behind our police department in such a positive way," she added. "This project took off, beyond what I imagined."
Her husband has been on the force for 38 years.
"He has a wonderful department of caring, hard-working professionals," O'Connor said. "When I saw what was going on throughout the country – the terrible backlash against law enforcement officers – it broke my heart. I knew I had to do something to show the Lyndhurst Police that here in town they are much loved and very much appreciated."
And they've noticed.
"Many of the cops expressed to me how much it means to them," O'Connor said. "So for that, I have achieved my goal."
