WALLINGTON, N.J. — They call themselves the "Happy Hookers," and the Wallington crocheters really are just that.

A group of seniors have been meeting Wednesdays and Fridays in Wallington to create hats, scarves and afghans for others in need.

The "hookers" recently made a donation of 39 baby hats to the American Heart Association, and 40 hats and scarves to The River, a missionary in Hackensack that feeds the homeless.

"You can only make so much for you and your family," said member Maria Leone, 73 of Wallington.

"This is a very feel good thing that we all do, and it’s great camaraderie."

The members hail from Wallington, Lyndhurst, Garfield, East Rutherford and Passaic. They don't moan and groan, Leone said.

"We just laugh," she said. "It's a very good thing for us to do."
