Elizabeth Police And Fire Pitching In To Save St. Mary School Alumni of St. Mary of the Assumption School in Elizabeth have planned a fundraiser Saturday to raise the approximately $2 million officials say are needed to keep the school open. Citing ongoing financial difficulties, the Archdiocese of Newark announced last month that the 90-year-old school would be shut down for good.  The school, located at 237 S. Broad Street, boasts a 100 percent college acceptance rate for its graduating seniors, with millions in scholarships awarded to a group that comes largely from urban areas.
