The blaze at Garfield and Bayview Avenue had progressed to a widespread, 7-alarm blaze as of 4 p.m.

Service to the Hudson Bergen Light Rail Service was suspended in both directions between Liberty State Park and 45th Street Station.

Motorists have been diverted and are encouraged to avoid the Turnpike area near the scene, the city announced. The city said they are monitoring air quality.

User video from the Citizen App shows heavy smoke emitting from the scene.

Last week, a four-alarm fire in Jersey City damaged three homes and displaced 17 people.
