Group Sues, Alleges Political Firings By Bergen County

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- A group of Bergen County employees with civil service status have sued in federal court, claiming they’re the victims of politically-motivated firings, according to a report in Northjersey.com.

Eight of 21 employees who got layoff notices last month say they were supporters of former County Executive Kathleen Donovan, and are being retaliated against, Northjersey.com said. 

The county has given notice they are being eliminated for “economy and efficiency,” one of the few grounds under civil service for termination. But they say the county hired more than 600 new workers last year, making the “economy and efficiency” argument baseless.

The layoffs take effect January 1, NorthJersey.com reported. A hearing is scheduled at 2 p.m. Friday in Newark, when attorney Anthony Rainone will seek a temporary restraining order to stop the layoffs
