Democratic Bergen County Freeholder Trio Re-Elected

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Voters returned a trio of Democratic Bergen County freeholders to office on Tuesday.

Incumbents Tracy Zur led the way with 63,114 votes, followed closely by Steve Tanelli's 63,059, according to unofficial results from the Bergen County Board of Elections.

They far outdistanced GOP challengers John Mitchell (50,805 votes) and Ken Tyburczy (48,879) for three available three-year seats. Green Party candidate Richard Siegel with 4,085.

Meanwhile, Thomas Sullivan Jr. (62,746 votes) topped Republican Daisy Ortiz-Berger (45,748) and Libertarian Peter Rohrman, who fell four votes shy of 5,000 for a one-year unexpired term that opened when Jim Tedesco left the freeholder board to become county executive in January.

Among the victors' accomplishments the past year was folding the former Bergen County Police Department into the county sheriff's office.

Next up is a priority of Tedesco's: determining the future of Bergen Regional Medical Center when its contract expires in less than two years.
