Resolution 158-16 was passed designating February as the time to recognize technical education and the careers that follow. On hand to accept a copy of the resolution was Howard Lerner, Superintendent of Bergen County Vocational-Technical Schools (BCTS). County Executive James J. Tedesco delivered the resolution.
Lerner updated the Freeholders on the recent accolades and accomplishments achieved by BCTS, including being named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2015, with campuses ranking 5 and 28 on Newsweek’s 2015 list of the best high schools in the country. He highlighted several programs, including aerospace engineering, being offered in partnership with Teterboro’s Aviation Hall of Fame. He also mentioned a new Applied Technology High School on the campus of Bergen Community College that offers advanced STEM education and dual enrollment coursework at the college.
BCTS also administers an Emergency Medical Services training academy that annually trains over 400 individuals in Emergency Medical Technician services, Heavy Rescue, and Hazardous Materials.
“Our Bergen County Technical Schools system is one of the best in the country and it’s wonderful to see them not only receive recognition for the work they do, but also serve as a role model for school systems across the world,” said Freeholder Joan Voss. “As a teacher for many years I know how hard it is to stay ahead of the curve with limited resources, but Dr. Lerner does an excellent job of constantly offering new and innovative partnerships to make sure we are giving our students the best education possible.”
“This month we recognize the great work Dr. Lerner and his staff do all year long,” said Freeholder Chairman Steve Tanelli. “We are going above and beyond to keep our county’s students on the cutting edge of technology and prepare them with the skills that employers are going to be looking for, as well as re-training adults with skills that let them find new careers.”
