The academy will be held at Westmoreland School the week of July 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.

This year’s theme: “In Order To Get Respect, You Must Give Respect.”

Young recruits will be treated to “age-appropriate” demonstrations from the borough’s police, fire, heavy rescue and ambulance squads, as well as the Bergen County Police Department K9 squad and the New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit.

They’ll also visit the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Complex in Mahwah and the county courthouse and Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Identification, both in Hackensack.

The Fair Lawn police instructors “will give lessons and demonstrations about the history of the Fair Lawn Police, criminal investigations, missing and abducted children, self-defense, drug education and other police-related activities,” Detective Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

There is no cost to attend the academy and lunch will be provided free every day, Metzler said.

Space is limited, however.

First-time attendees will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis, while previous recruits interested in returning will be admitted to whatever spaces are left, the sergeant said.

Deadline for applications is July 18.
