Henry Campbell, 56, of Newark was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center after falling into the tank and inhaling its vapors at the Hartin Paint & Filler Corporation on Broad Street just before 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon, Police Chief Thomas Nielsen said.

A co-worker pulled Campbell from the vat and placed him atop the tank. In doing so, the co-worker was exposed to the vapors himself, and was taken to HUMC, as well.

He was believed to be OK.

Several responding emergency personnel from the Carlstadt Volunteer Ambulance Corps and medics from HUMC had to undergo decontamination after being exposed, Nielsen said.

Bergen County HazMat and NJ OSHA responded to the scene. The state Department of Environmental Protection was also notified, the chief said.
