FROM LAST NIGHT (UPDATE): A fast-moving Wood-Ridge fence fire ignited by a short-circuited electrical box last night spread to a garage but was quickly snuffed by firefighters.

Wood-Ridge police and firefighters responded in less than a minute to the 8:22 p.m. call on dead-ended Sussex Road off Hackensack Street, Police Chief Joseph Rutigliano told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

They found the wooden fence and a neighboring garage off Hillcrest Avenue afire, he said.

Residents were evacuated as firefighters attacked the blaze, which consumed 40 feet of fence and the garage’s siding — with flames so intense that siding on a nearby garage melted, as well.

“Windows were shattered and house fixtures melted at a house on Sussex Road,” Rutigliano said.

Several residents “voiced their concern over how fast the fire was moving and how quickly the fire department responded and put out the fire,” the chief said.

Marshall Damian Cauceglia and police Detective Matt Mueller traced teh case to the in-ground electrical box, he said.
