Witnesses said the firefighter was speeding and driving erratically when he lost control of his Dodge Viper south on River Road near Belmont Avenue, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The vehicle spun into the oncoming lane, where it “t-boned” the victim’s car, Molinelli said.

There’s no evidence of drug or alcohol use, he said.

Prosecutors have charged him with 4th-degree assault by auto causing serious bodily injury. They’re asking a judge that he be held on $10,000 bail.

The victim most recently as listed critical at Hackensack University Medical Center.

Although it wasn’t clear whether the firefighter was responding to a call, Molinelli said that isn’t a consideration in such instances.

He wasn’t injured, nor was a passenger in the victim’s car, the prosecutor said.
