Wild Chase Ends On Maywood RR Tracks: 3 Caught, 1 Sought In Porch Thefts

MAYWOOD, N.J. -- A wild chase down Route 17 and through several side streets ended when a group of men who Maywood police said were stealing packages off porches tried driving on the railroad tracks.

Officer Brian Rubio grabbed two suspects, and backups who quickly arrived corralled another in a backyard off West Central Avenue, Police Chief David Pegg told Daily Voice.

As of 6 p.m., Bergen County Sheriff's K-9 units were helping search for a fourth suspect, said Pegg, who was among the responders.

At least two of those arrested are from Paterson, he said.

Less than an hour earlier, Pegg's officers tried to stop a black Chevy Suburban amid reports of the porch thefts less than two blocks from an afternoon fire scene, the chief said.

"They must have thought no one was paying attention," he told Daily Voice.

The chase was on, with the suspects "throwing packages out the window" as they led officers onto the highway, Pegg said.

Concerned for public safety, police broke off the chase -- but the driver inexplicably tried driving along the railroad tracks, disabling the truck, the chief said.

"They jumped out and ran down the tracks, but Rubio got two of them quickly," he said.
