Reports are that 51-year-old James Gilly of Ridgefield Park was apparently seen around Maywood with a wheelchair on Friday.

“Where he got it from, we don’t know,” Maywood Police Chief David Pegg told CLIFFVIEW PILOT tonight.

The last report came in to police less than 15 minutes before a more urgent call: Gilly’s body had been found four blocks away, on East Pleasant Avenue near Elm Street, in that night’s rain, Pegg said.

The wheelchair was found a few houses away, and Gilly’s boot about 20 feet from where he lay, the chief said.

Surveillance video obtained by police show a red car headed up the block, then turning around, coming toward Gilly and stopping before going around him, Pegg said.

It was last seen headed north on Elm Street, he said.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Unit and the county Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification assisted with the investigation, Pegg said.

They’re all hoping that someone comes forward with information that helps them determine what happened.
