What a hero looks like

ONLY ON CLIFFVIEW PILOT: It seems Bergen County Sheriff’s Officer Timothy Monahan not only has a good eye for faces: He apparently has a tenacity for snagging guys who don’t own up to their responsibilities.

Lawrence Barlow was wanted for failing to pay $60,000 in child support when Monahan spotted him on Hudson Street in Hackensack.

Barlow was one of nearly 160 people — mostly deadbeat dads — rounded up by Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire‘s forces in August. Some made payments and were allowed to remain free. Others were jailed and made arrangements with the court. When Barlow failed to hold up his end, Superior Court Judge Lisa Colon-Friscia ordered that he be returned to jail.

But Barlow took off when Monahan approached him Tuesday afternoon around sunset, running east toward River Street. The officer was right on his tail.

Barlow suddenly turned back toward Hudson Street and began throwing metal trash cans at the officer — just like in the movies.

By that time, several colleagues had shown up and Barlow was hauled off to the Bergen County Jail, just blocks away.

“I am extraordinarily proud of Officer Monahan,” Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire said. “His determination to get his man should serve as warning to criminals throughout Bergen County: Any attempt to run from the BCSO is a flight of fancy.”

(Ouch!)
